Women's Self Defense

I am the only certified instructor in the Scranton Pocono Northeast Region in both the “Fight Like a Girl” (FLAG) and "Girl on Guard" (GOG) systems developed by Steve Kardian. This class is available to women only, and turns a popular saying on its head. These programs acknowledge that women have different strengths than men, and thus should use different techniques. Most women will not prevail if they try to match a criminal punch for punch in a stand-up fight. I teach the use of legs, hips, and most of all leverage to defeat a hostile attacker.

The program starts by teaching the student how to escape the worst case scenario—the sexual assault position. This sends an important message. Even when it seems that the student is in the most vulnerable position, the tables can be turned immediately, and the attacker becomes the one in danger. There is never a point where a woman need feel defenseless—even in the worst case scenario.

Female assistants are on hand throughout the course to help teach these techinques, and make the student feel more comfortable as she learns that what she once thought were vulnerable positions are really positions of great leverage and power.

From there, we develop the techniques needed to avoid that scenario. By the time the student has completed the course, she no longer has the victim mindset. She will see sexual assault or kidnapping attempts as problems that have solutions. She will respond to full power attacks with appropriate and effective techniques. She will gain a confidence and an awareness that many times will prevent the need for the use of her training.

Tsunami Self-Defense

Tsunami Self-Defense is a co-educational program that I have developed. My system of personal protection is well rounded, covering a mind, body connection within self-defense. I use traditional martial arts philosophy and techniques to help prepare people for modern day attacks and dangerous situations.

In this course you will learn

  • Awareness techniques: proactive thinking and how to avoid harmful situations in the first place. In other words, I teach how NOT to be a target, or an easy mark.

  • Meditation. Each class begins and ends with self-awarness meditation. The participants will learn breathing techniques, and how to stay “calm in the storm,” which is one of the most valuable things to know when attacked.

  • To use abdominal breathing and shouts for distraction and impact. This is taken from Karate and the Tai Chi tradition.

  • Real Life Role Play: being aware of danger areas such as parking lots / garages, back alley short cuts, stairways, shrubs, and so on. I teach Behavior patters and warning signals of potential abusers, assailants, and criminals.

  • Attacks: response to and release from grabs, holds, and joint locks. I teach blocks and strikes to defend and prevail.

  • The “Anatomy of an Attack,” and how to act in the few crucial seconds of the confrontation.

  • This class spans a variety of martial arts, focusing on the most practical and effective techniques for self-defense. A graduate of this class will be able to walk anywhere in confidence, and will know where NOT to walk—even though he or she can.

In addition, this program can be beneficial to someone who has experienced rape, sexual assault, relationship violence, abuse, or any sort of attack. It is a way to help regain confidence, self worth, and the skills to move on in their lives.

A tsunami is a great and powerful wave caused by an undersea earthquake. The earthquake is symbolic of the attack. The wave is a reaction to the attack. Before the the attack, the ocean is calm. But when attacked, we need to rise up like a great and powerful tsunami.

Mushin-Do

Mushin-Do

“Do” means “way;" “Mu” means “no;" Shin means "mind/heart mind." Thus Mushin-Do is a martial art that stresses the ability to respond without thinking. The moves flow naturally and are always appropriate for the situation.

This is the most traditional and complex of the courses, is open to both men and women, and has a colored belt system (white, yellow, green, brown, black). A black belt in Mushin-Do takes between four to seven years, on average, largely dependant on how much time the student can spend on the training.

Mushin-Do has no competitive or sport element. We train for health & wellness, not for competition or tournaments. The ultimate aim of the martial arts is to become better people, for a better world.
